A practical sorting guide for when everything is piling up

Step 1: Write down the problems

You can write one, two or three.

Step 2: Give each one a place

NOW: Health, safety, an urgent deadline or serious consequences.

SOON: Important, but there is some time.

LATER: Can reasonably wait.

If you are unsure about a serious health, safety, financial or legal matter, get appropriate advice.

Step 3: Pick one action

The problemA possible first action
An unpaid billCheck the amount and due date
A missed clinic appointmentFind the clinic contact details
An unanswered messageDraft a short reply
A difficult family conversationWrite down what needs to be said
A work deadlineContact the relevant person about the situation
A document you cannot findIdentify where to request a replacement

Step 4: Check what is actually stopping you

Step 5: Use a short message

"I know this has been outstanding for a while. I'm trying to address it now. Could you tell me what my options are?"

You can adapt that wording for a bill, appointment, missed deadline or another responsibility.

Step 6: Remember the difference

The problem: Something that needs attention.

The shame: The belief that the problem makes you a failure.

You can work on the first without accepting the second.
