Adults sometimes assume children forget.

The argument.

The move.

The person who disappeared.

The year money was tight.

The teacher who embarrassed them.

The grandmother who made them feel safe.

Children may not understand everything happening around them.

That does not mean they are untouched by it.

Sometimes childhood memories survive less as facts and more as feelings.

I felt safe there.

Everybody was angry.

Nobody explained anything.

She listened to me.

Children are already experiencing their lives while adults are busy managing them.

Sometimes they need somebody to explain what is happening in words small enough to carry.
