Sometimes that is the whole sentence.
Mi nuh good today.
You may not have a neat explanation for it.
Nobody necessarily did anything to you. Nothing dramatic may have happened this morning. You may not even know whether what you are feeling is sadness, exhaustion, frustration, loneliness or something else entirely.
You just know that today, you do not feel like yourself.
And sometimes the hardest part is believing you need a good enough reason.
Not every hard day comes with an explanation
There are days when getting started takes more effort than usual.
You answer fewer messages.
Food does not interest you much.
Noise irritates you.
People asking questions feels exhausting.
Something you normally enjoy does absolutely nothing for you.
You may be doing everything you are supposed to do while feeling strangely absent from your own life.
That does not automatically mean you have depression. Human beings have difficult days for many reasons, including stress, poor sleep, grief, illness, hormonal changes, relationship problems, financial pressure and plain emotional exhaustion.
But you do not need to diagnose yourself before acknowledging that you are struggling.
Stop arguing with the feeling for a minute
Sometimes we spend more energy trying to prove we should not feel bad than actually noticing what we need.
“Other people have it worse.”
“I have nothing to complain about.”
“Mi too miserable.”
“I should be grateful.”
Gratitude and difficulty can exist at the same time.
You can love your family and need a break from them.
You can appreciate your job and feel exhausted by it.
You can have good things in your life and still have a day when you are not good.
Try replacing “I shouldn't feel this way” with:
“This is how I feel today. What would make the next hour a little easier?”
That is a much more useful question.
Make today smaller
When your energy is low, the full day can feel like too much.
So do not carry the whole day at once.
Maybe the next thing is drinking some water.
Maybe it is opening the window.
Maybe it is bathing.
Maybe bathing feels like too much, so the next thing is washing your face.
Maybe you need something to eat that requires almost no preparation.
Maybe you need to tell somebody:
“Mi nuh really good today. Yuh don't have to fix it. Just check pon me later.”
Small does not mean meaningless.
Sometimes small is exactly the size of help your brain can manage.
Pay attention if the hard days keep coming
One difficult day is part of being human.
But if this feeling is happening frequently, lasting for weeks, getting worse, or beginning to affect eating, sleeping, work, school, relationships, hygiene or your ability to care for yourself, it deserves more attention.
You do not have to wait until you are completely overwhelmed before speaking to someone you trust or seeking professional support.
And you do not need the perfect words.
You can start with the same sentence you started here:
Mi nuh good today.
That is enough to begin.
