Sometimes nobody has to insult you.

You have already learned how to do it yourself.

You compare your body.

Your money.

Your relationship.

Your career.

Your parenting.

Your grades.

Your house.

Your progress.

Your life at 25, 35, 45 or 55 with where you thought it would be.

And somehow you keep arriving at the same conclusion:

Everybody doing better than me.

Comparison rarely uses fair evidence

You know your entire life.

You often know only the visible parts of somebody else's.

You compare your behind-the-scenes with their announcement.

Their graduation.

Their engagement.

Their new car.

Their vacation.

Their promotion.

You do not necessarily see the debt, grief, uncertainty, arguments, fear or ordinary mess around the photograph.

Worth and achievement are not the same thing

Achievements matter.

Goals matter.

Improvement matters.

But if your worth only exists when you are accomplishing something, every setback becomes an identity crisis.

You did not become less human because something failed.

You are not less deserving of care because somebody rejected you.

You are not worthless because you are unemployed.

You are not behind because your life does not resemble somebody else's timeline.

Notice how you speak to yourself

Would you speak to somebody you love the way you speak to yourself after a mistake?

If not, try changing the sentence.

Instead of:

“Mi stupid.”

Try:

“I handled that badly.”

Instead of:

“Mi can't do anything right.”

Try:

“This did not work.”

Specific criticism can help you improve.

Global condemnation just beats you up.

Build evidence, not slogans

You do not have to stare into a mirror and declare yourself magnificent if you do not believe it.

Start smaller.

Write down three things you handled this week.

Maybe you went to work when you were tired.

Apologised.

Asked for help.

Fed your child.

Set a boundary.

Tried again.

Confidence often grows from evidence.

If self-hatred is becoming persistent

If thoughts about yourself are consistently cruel, hopeless or connected to urges to harm yourself, reach for professional support.

You do not have to wait until you like everything about yourself.

For today, we can start with:

Maybe I do not deserve to be spoken to like this, even by me.
